REALTIME CONTROL

• Lower cost. The wind sensor has only one moving part, simple sensor electronics and requires fewer connecting wires than older technologies so the cost to manufacture is lower.
• Longer mean time between failures. The mechanical components and the interconnecting wiring of anemometers generally fail more frequently than the electronic components. Our design halves the number of mechanical components and reduces interconnecting wiring to two conductors, which  typically doubles MTBF.
• Improved accuracy. Anemometers which use older technologies typically have direction measurement accuracy poorer than +/- 3 degrees. Our technology can give accuracy of +/- 1.5 degrees.
• Lightning immunity and EMC. A Rotorvane sensor can be totally non-electronic, and connected to the on-ground electronics only by optical fibers. This greatly reduces vulnerability to lightning and EMI. Our Rotorvane Fiber Optic Anemometer  is unmatched  for exposed sites and where other systems are connected to the wind instrumentation.
• Elimination of drift. Older technologies which use analog methods suffer from drift with time. Our technology is all digital, so there is no drift.

Our design eliminates the traditional wind vane and associated encoder from the sensor system. The single Rotorvane sensor is of the general form of a conventional cup anemometer but the rotor is  made aerodynamically asymmetric so that its speed varies throughout each rotation in a manner which depends on wind direction. Wind direction is  determined from the variations in rotor speed. Wind speed is determined in the traditional way from mean rotor speed.
