Welcome to my webpage. This page is intended to serve as a guide for parents of intellectually gifted children living in Western Australia, who are seeking an appropriate education for their child.
Over recent years more and more schools have begun to see the provision of education for gifted children as important and have set up programs to help these children to learn and achieve their potential. This is a great thing for gifted children but even though a wider range of programs for the gifted now exist and many schools make provision for these children, finding out about these programs has often been difficult.
It is the purpose of this page to, hopefully, make that task easier for parents by providing them with a list of some schools who have stated they make provision for gifted students. It will certainly not replace proper research - the schools provisions must be examined in detail to ensure they will be right for your child - but, it should, at least give you a place to start looking.
It must be noted that the omission of a school from this list does not mean that that school is not a good school for your gifted child, and it certainly does not indicate that a school is not a good school. Many schools may make special provision for gifted children and this simply is not known to me - either because they do not make such information public knowledge, or because it did not appear in my sources. Other schools may make no special provision, but instead successfully educate and cater for gifted children within their normal classroom programs.
Many schools omitted from this list stated in documents that I have read that they seek to 'cater for individual differences' or that they 'treat all children individually' or that they 'successfully educate all children with special needs'. I considered very carefully whether or not these schools should be included in the listing because those statements can mean that gifted children are catered for at such schools. In the end, I elected not to include such schools in the absence of other information because my experience has shown me that such statements can sometimes be inclusive of all children - except gifted children. I make no judgement of whether or not this applies in the cases of these schools - in many cases, perhaps all cases, such schools do not exclude gifted children from their definitions. But I consider it to be the lesser of two evils to risk excluding some schools that cater for gifted children from this list if it avoids the risk of including a school in this list that does not make provision for the gifted.
For the same reason, schools that say they provide 'enrichment' for students have also been excluded in the absence of any other information. This is because enrichment can have a great many meanings - it can include provision for gifted children, it can also mean that a school provides swimming lessons. Again, I make no judgement on whether or not such schools do make provision for gifted children as part of their enrichment programs - I simply do not know the answer and once again I have decided it is better to risk the exclusion of a school from this list that does provide enrichment for the gifted, than to risk including a school that does not and so risk parents sending their child to a school that does not meet the needs of their child based on the information on this page.
As a further clarification about the two paragraphs above, let me make it clear that statements that a school 'cater to all needs' or 'have enrichment programs' do not mean that a school will not appear in this listing. Rather, such information simply does not comprise a reason for a school's inclusion by itself. For example, if I have seen other information that confirms a school's enrichment programs do include provisions for gifted children, I will include that school in the listing but I must have clear and unambiguous information.
If any Western Australian schools not included in this list would like to provide me with information on any provisions they make for the education of gifted children, I will be happy to include an entry for that school. By the same token, if any school that is included would like to provide me with more information, I am happy to add that to this page. In these cases, please e-mail me at drednort@alphalink.com.au
Finally, let me make clear that this page is for information purposes only - it is not intended to replace detailed investigation of a school by parents for their child, merely to provide them with some possible places to start. Always remember that what is said and what is actually done can differ, and even a good gifted program may not be appropriate for any individual gifted child. While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy with regards to the information on this page, I accept no responsibility for any inaccuracies that may have occurred (beyond a responsibility to correct such inaccuracies if they are brought to my attention) and I accept no responsibility for the use or misuse of the information on this page. Except where prior Copyrights exist, this page is © 2001 Shaun Hately. Linking to this page is permitted (indeed encouraged), but please do not reproduce any of the information contained here without obtaining permission from me - such permission will virtually always be given.
In simple terms, the page is set out as an alphabetical listing of schools. This is the easiest way to display the information and if you know the name of the school you are interested in, you can simply scroll down the list until you find it.
But many people do not know the name of a school they are interested in and so I have provided a series of menus. These menus will list schools by:
These menus are located below and should be simple to use. Simply find the menu you wish to use, and then click on the name of a school to be taken to its entry in the alphabetical list.
The following information is provided for each school where I have been able to find it.
In many cases it may be convenient to contact schools by e-mail. For anyone who does not have an e-mail address and wishes to communicate via e-mail, www.hotmail.com provides free web-based e-mail (there are numerous other similar services - but this is a guide to schools not e-mail providers).
You will notice when you view the list of schools that it is quite colourful. These colours exist for a reason and conform to the following key:
As this page develops, other colours may come to be used to represent other sources of information, etc. A key will be included if that is the case.
The following menus are simple to use. Simply
choose which menu you wish to use, and when you have identified a
school you would like to obtain information on, click with the
mouse on its name and you will be taken to the appropriate entry.
These menus are still under construction following the recent
update to this site.
In constructing this menu, I have decided to list schools by the name of the Education District in which they can be found. Even though private schools do not make use of the Education Department's districts, this is a convenient system for the purposes of this page, and so they are included in these listings. For maps that will allow you to identify different districts please go to the Department of Education's page at http://www.eddept.wa.edu.au/deo/deomaps.htm

If the school is a private school (not government run) it will be classified by its religious affiliation (including a category of non-denominational). Bear in mind that some schools affiliated with a particular religion do accept students from other faiths.

In compiling these menus, I have decided to have only three categories: Primary, Secondary, and Kindergarten to Year 12
It should be realised that some schools also offer classes at a Pre-School level. Logistics make it impractical to include them in this menu system.
While the menu system as described above will not provide full details on which years a school teaches, that information is provided in the main alphabetical listing.

"ACADEMIC EXTENSION
PROGRAM
The Academic Extension Programme is designed and run by the Ministry of Education as a challenge to the states most capable students.
Within the programme, class content
is similar to mainstream subjects with the exception of a more
enriched learning environment.
Students have more of an opportunity to
learn things first hand, from actual experience and practical
learning.
SELECTIONS
The Academic Extension Program at Applecross Senior High was started in 1986, testing Primary aged students for entry to the program statewide. This continued until 1989 when the numbers for the program grew so that students today are tested from the feeder primary schools for that high school only.
Selection is based on performance and teacher recommendation. Although selections for the programme are made in Primary School, once the programme starts, students can move in and out according to their performance in High School from semester to semester." (http://www.axnet.wa.edu.au/html/ae.html)

"Academic Talent Program
In 1994 the Education Department implemented a new policy for the education of gifted (ability) and talented (performance) students in lower school. In 1995 it introduced the Academic Talent Program (ATP) to Year 8 as a sub-set of the Secondary Special Placement Program.
Governor Stirling offers studies in both Humanities (English and Society & Environment) and Mathematics/Science. The teaching/learning program is based on the Curriculum Framework and the Outcomes and Standards Framework. It provides students with the opportunity to learn in a challenging, student centred environment which encourages creativity, independent learning and high order thinking. A special semester course is offered to Year 8 in Business Education and Computing.
The students are initially selected based on tests conducted in Year 7 through Central Office, and some other students gain entry to individual ATP classes based on their performance in a specific subject and a position being available in that class. ATP students at this school can be offered a place in either one or both of the focus areas: Humanities and Mathematics/Science, depending on their test results. They are then required to maintain an acceptable level of achievement in order to retain their position in the program.
Governor Stirling provides two Coordinators to monitor the academic progress and performance of our ATP students, to look after their welfare, and to liaise between parents and/or Swanleigh." (http://www.govo.wa.edu.au/profile/curriculum/atp/)

"MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE
The Academic Excellence Mathematics and Science programs have been running at John Curtin SHS for several years.
The program is supported by the appointment of a coordinator whose main role is to oversee the program, and be a link between teachers, students, and parents.
Selection in the year 8 program is by one of three methods.
Sitting the John Curtin SHS selection test in June. (When in year 7). An eligible score will guarantee a place in the program. Sitting the EDWA Academic Talent Program test, obtaining entry into that program, but choosing to attend John Curtin SHS. (If sufficient places are available). Attending John Curtin SHS, and being recommended by the classroom teacher to join the program. (If a place is available).
To sit the John Curtin SHS test, a position must be reserved. Information regarding the test date is advertised in "The West Australian" and community newspapers in May. The school secretary can be contacted for confirmation of reservation or dates.
The school has information evenings for parents of prospective students several times each year. Contact the secretary for dates and further information.
A student may be selected for either or both Mathematics and Science programs. Selection in either or both will not mean that other special programs cannot be taken, as these programs run independently.
The individual teachers determine the content of the extension courses.
Students in the extension program are expected to maintain high academic standards, as well as participating in external competitions. Some students will be invited to participate in challenge events. Both departments (mathematics and science) are fully supportive of students who enter these events.
Students may be removed from the program. This may be done if a student is not maintaining adequate academic standards, or behavior or disclipine standards are not at a satisfactory level.
The Dulcie Skuraski Scholarship is awarded to the student with the highest mathematics score in the John Curtin SHS test, and attends John Curtin SHS. This scholarship pays for the lower school fees while the student maintains academic standards.
A small fee is charged for entry into these programs.
Further information may be obtained from the Academic Excellence Program coordinator, or the secretary." (http://www.jc.wa.edu.au/specprog/aep.html)

"Academic Extension
Lockridge Senior High School offers students who are academically gifted and talented the opportunity to extend their abilities in the areas of Mathematics, English, Science and Social Studies by providing the students with an Academic Extension Program.
Students are selected by evaluating their past and current records (including primary school achievement where appropriate), their attitude to their education and their work ethos. Selection of students is performance based, and is ongoing. Students can therefore be promoted to, or if necessary demoted from the class as time goes by.
The Academic Extension Program
replaces the student's normal class(es) and provides different
work for the students to complete. The
extension studies vary from subject to
subject. However some features of the work include: moving
through the work at a faster pace,
encouraging students to learn things for
themselves through research, problem solving, both individually
and in groups, and more emphasis on independent study.
The classes ran in year 8 in 1996,
and it is anticipated that they will eventually run in years 8, 9
and 10. Please contact the Academic
Extension Coordinator at the school if
you would like more information." (http://www.lockridge.wa.edu.au/schlinfo/courses/acadext.htm)

"Curriculum
The Moerlina curriculum is based on the Western Australian Curriculum Framework. There are currently six full-time teachers and a teachers' assistant. In addition, music and Italian language classes are provided each week by specialist teachers coming into the school. A specialist teacher is also employed to assist children with remediation and extension needs.
The school timetable ensures that
language, arts, mathematics, social studies, and science are
covered in the daily sessions. Sufficient
flexibility is included to enable
students to participate in educational events occurring in the
community. The school aims for self-motivated children. To this
end, freedom to do something different is encouraged during
option periods, provided that the child can handle the different
situation.
In 1998, Moerlina introduced a
Differentiated Learning Program which has lead to earlier and
better identification of individual children's
learning styles and special abilities.
This enables teachers to make better provision for each child,
both in the classroom and in special
groupings. All children at Moerlina are
expected to benefit from a more informed and comprehensive
differentiated learning approach in the School as we make better
use of our valuable teaching resources." (http://www.moerlina.edwa.net.au/parents.htm)

"Year 8 Academic Extension Program
Parent Information 2001...
Year 8 Academic Extension
The year 8-extension program in English,
Science and Society and Environment will commence in week 3 of
term 2. This date was chosen in order to allow our year eight
students a reasonable time to settle into school life and for
teachers to gain an appreciation of their abilities. Staff will
be asked for nominations of students for the program in weeks 9
and 10 of term 1. Classes will commence at the start of week 3
after the selection process has taken place. Please note that the
year 8 Mathematics extension program has already commenced.
Students are selected for this program based on their primary
school mathematics performance. Mr Troy is the teacher of the
year 8 mathematics extension class in 2001.
Selection of students
Teachers receive a checklist in their
subject area that lists the characteristics of gifted students.
This checklist was developed by the Education Department as part
of the TAGS (Talented & Gifted Students) kit and assists
teachers when making nominations for the extension program.
Teachers will also use test results, assignment work, group
participation as well as reflecting on attitude and behavioural
characteristics of students before making their final
nominations.
Parents are also able to suggest their child for nomination into the extension program. The coordinator will investigate such requests. Parents may be given a checklist if they wish to nominate their child so that they can gauge the suitability of their child before teachers are approached. If a parent considers their child suitable for extension then it is suggested that parents ask their child to approach the teacher in order to express their interest in the program. This would enable teachers to be aware of the interest of students in their class and would provide further opportunity for teachers to reflect on the suitability of students expressing interest in the program.
Students who have been nominated for the program will receive a letter of invitation. If the student wishes to accept the nomination after discussion with their parents then they will need to complete the return slip at the bottom of the letter of invitation and return it to the coordinator in Science Office 2 by the due date.
Student Commitment
It is expected that students accepting a
nomination for the program be committed to that program. Students
can leave the program but must provide a suitable reason to the
extension coordinator. This reason must be explained in a letter
from the parent of the student.
Type of Program - Revolving Door
Model
The Rossmoyne Senior High School
extension program is based on the revolving door model where
students enter and leave the program at various times and for
various reason. Students can enter the program at various times
during the year due to staff nominations, parent suggestions or
by being a new student to the school. Some students leave the
program for various reasons the main one usually being an over
commitment in several areas of school life. The extension program
seeks to further develop the skills and abilities of our talented
students by fostering an environment in which challenging
opportunities are presented and where students can work with
peers who share similar interests and ability.
Reporting
All year 8 students will receive a
report at the end of at the end of the academic year. No report
is given at the end of Semester 1 as teachers of extension
classes have only seen students on a few occasions. Students who
have successfully completed the program will also receive a
certificate that acknowledges their extra achievements. This
certificate will be available at the end of the academic year and
will be a valuable addition to their portfolios.
Help
Parents may also be able to make our
extension program more interesting and challenging. If you are
involved in an interesting profession or have expertise in an
area that you feel would be of interest to a group of our
extension students and would be able to make yourself available
for participation in our program we would be most interested to
hear from you. Please do not hesitate to contact the subject
teacher concerned or the extension coordinator." (http://www.rossmoyne.wa.edu.au/yracadex.htm)
