The following instructions will allow you to set up, or trouble-shoot where necessary, a dialup connection on MacOS X.
The first part of setting up or checking the configuration of
your Alphalink connection is to set the dialup information. Follow
these steps:

Click the Apple icon
Click System Preferences:

Click on the Network icon:

Select Configure: Using PPP
Note: You don not need to enter anything under Domain Name Servers or Search Domains
Click PPP:

Enter "Alphalink" for your Service Provider
Enter the Alphalink dialup number (check your information
sheet or call 1300 137 425 if you are unsure)
Enter your Alphalink username (i.e. loginname@alphalink.com.au) and password
Tick Save Password (unless you want to have to type it each time)
Click PPP Options:

Configure the different Session Options as preferred (you will probably
want "Connect automatically" ticked)
Tick "Send PPP echo packets" & "Use TCP header compression" in Advanced
Options
Make sure that "Connect using a terminal window" is NOT ticked
Click OK
Click the Proxies tab:

Make sure that none of the boxes are ticked
Click Modem:

Set your settings as above - make sure that the correct modem is
selected. iMac users will usually be using the Apple Internal modem
shown
Click Apply Now or Save.

as the new updates fix a lot of problems present in the initial
release of MacOS X.
