Installation

To install Alphalink on Windows NT 4, use the setup CD in your initial setup pack or obtain one either:
  • By post: call Support on 1300 137 425 or email us at admin@alphalink.com.au, and they will arrange for one to be posted out. CDs are posted at around 4pm each day and usually arrive the next day.
Note: If you do not have a CD Rom drive, setup is also available on diskette.

If you have any problems with the installation, contact us on 1300 137 425 or email support@alphalink.com.au.

However, if there's some reason you can not use the CD (or you are feeling adventurous), follow these steps to get yourself setup:

  1. Double click on My Computer
  2. Double click on Dial-Up Networking
  3. If you have used Dial-Up Networking before, just click the New button. If you haven't, you will be prompted to install it - once this is done, go back into Dial-up Networking and you should be prompted to add a new entry
  4. Type in Alphalink as the name of the connection
  5. Tick "I know all about phonebook entries..."
  6. Click Finish
  7. On the Basic tab:
    • Type the appropriate Alphalink dialup number for your account in the Phone number box (check the information sheet that came with your account if you are unsure about which number to use)
    • Make sure there is no tick in Use Telephony dialing properties
    • Next to Dial Using you should have your modem selected
    • Make sure there is no tick in Use another port if busy
  8. On the Server tab:
    • Dial-Up Server type should be PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet
    • Under Network Protocols, only TCP/IP should be ticked
    • Click on TCP/IP Settings:
      • Make sure there is a dot on Server assigned IP address
      • Put a dot on Server assigned name server addresses
      • Make sure there is a tick in Use IP header compression
      • There should also be a tick in Use default gateway on remote network
      • Click OK
    • Make sure there is no tick in Enable software compression
    • There should be a tick in Enable PPP LCP extensions
  9. Click on the Script tab:
    • Make sure there is a dot on None
  10. Click on the Security tab:
    • Select Accept any authentication including clear text
  11. Click on the X.25 tab:
    • (none) should be selected next to Network
    • The other fields should be blank
  12. Click OK
  13. Click on Dial
  14. Enter your Alphalink login name (ie. loginname@alphalink.com.au) and password
  15. Tick the Save password box
  16. Click dial and you are done!

Once you are connected, we recommend that you download a new browser if you do not already have one on your system. NT4 comes with Internet Explorer 2 by default, which is very out-of-date and will have trouble viewing a large number of web sites. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ to upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer, or to http://www.netscape.com/ to get Netscape instead. Setup instructions for these, and for various email programs can be found in the Online Help section of our web site.

We also recommend that you download and install all of the updates for NT4, especially Service Pack 6a. You can find these on the Windows Update web site.
