Introduction

Welcome to my webpage. This page is intended to serve as a guide for parents of intellectually gifted children living in Queensland, Australia, who are seeking an appropriate education for their child.

Over recent years more and more schools have begun to see the provision of education for gifted children as important and have set up programs to help these children to learn and achieve their potential. This is a great thing for gifted children but even though a wider range of programs for the gifted now exist and many schools make provision for these children, finding out about these programs has often been difficult.

It is the purpose of this page to, hopefully, make that task easier for parents by providing them with a list of some schools who have stated they make provision for gifted students. It will certainly not replace proper research - the schools provisions must be examined in detail to ensure they will be right for your child - but, it should, at least give you a place to start looking.

It must be noted that the omission of a school from this list does not mean that that school is not a good school for your gifted child, and it certainly does not indicate that a school is not a good school. Many schools may make special provision for gifted children and this simply is not known to me - either because they do not make such information public knowledge, or because it did not appear in my sources. Other schools may make no special provision, but instead successfully educate and cater for gifted children within their normal classroom programs.

Many schools omitted from this list stated in documents that I have read that they seek to 'cater for individual differences' or that they 'treat all children individually' or that they 'successfully educate all children with special needs'. I considered very carefully whether or not these schools should be included in the listing because those statements can mean that gifted children are catered for at such schools. In the end, I elected not to include such schools in the absence of other information because my experience has shown me that such statements can sometimes be inclusive of all children - except gifted children. I make no judgement of whether or not this applies in the cases of these schools - in many cases, perhaps all cases, such schools do not exclude gifted children from their definitions. But I consider it to be the lesser of two evils to risk excluding some schools that cater for gifted children from this list if it avoids the risk of including a school in this list that does not make provision for the gifted.

For the same reason, schools that say they provide 'enrichment' for students have also been excluded in the absence of any other information. This is because enrichment can have a great many meanings - it can include provision for gifted children, it can also mean that a school provides swimming lessons. Again, I make no judgement on whether or not such schools do make provision for gifted children as part of their enrichment programs - I simply do not know the answer and once again I have decided it is better to risk the exclusion of a school from this list that does provide enrichment for the gifted, than to risk including a school that does not and so risk parents sending their child to a school that does not meet the needs of their child based on the information on this page.

As a further clarification about the two paragraphs above, let me make it clear that statements that a school 'cater to all needs' or 'have enrichment programs' do not mean that a school will not appear in this listing. Rather, such information simply does not comprise a reason for a school's inclusion by itself. For example, if I have seen other information that confirms a school's enrichment programs do include provisions for gifted children, I will include that school in the listing but I must have clear and unambiguous information.

If any Queensland schools not included in this list would like to provide me with information on any provisions they make for the education of gifted children, I will be happy to include an entry for that school. By the same token, if any school that is included would like to provide me with more information, I am happy to add that to this page. In these cases, please e-mail me at drednort@alphalink.com.au

Finally, let me make clear that this page is for information purposes only - it is not intended to replace detailed investigation of a school by parents for their child, merely to provide them with some possible places to start. Always remember that what is said and what is actually done can differ, and even a good gifted program may not be appropriate for any individual gifted child. While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy with regards to the information on this page, I accept no responsibility for any inaccuracies that may have occurred (beyond a responsibility to correct such inaccuracies if they are brought to my attention) and I accept no responsibility for the use or misuse of the information on this page. Using the Page

In simple terms, the page is set out as an alphabetical listing of schools. This is the easiest way to display the information and if you know the name of the school you are interested in, you can simply scroll down the list until you find it.

But many people do not know the name of a school they are interested in and so I have provided a series of menus. These menus will list schools by:

These menus are located below and should be simple to use. Simply find the menu you wish to use, and then click on the name of a school to be taken to its entry in the alphabetical list.

The following information is provided for each school where I have been able to find it.

In many cases it may be convenient to contact schools by e-mail. For anyone who does not have an e-mail address and wishes to communicate via e-mail, www.hotmail.com provides free web-based e-mail (there are numerous other similar services - but this is a guide to schools not e-mail providers).

You will notice when you view the list of schools that it is quite colourful. These colours exist for a reason and conform to the following key:

As this page develops, other colours may come to be used to represent other sources of information, etc. A key will be included if that is the case.

Navigation Menus

The following menus are simple to use. Simply choose which menu you wish to use, and when you have identified a school you would like to obtain information on, click with the mouse on its name and you will be taken to the appropriate entry. These menus are still under construction following the recent update to this site.

Schools by Geographic Location

In constructing this menu, I have decided to list schools by the name of the Education District in which they can be found. For maps that will allow you to identify different districts please go to Edcation Queenslands http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/maps/qld1.htm

Schools by Affiliation

Affiliation, in this case, can mean one of two things. The first is whether or not the school is a state school run by Education Queensland. These schools will be classified in one menu.

If the school is a private school (not government run) it will be classified by its religious affiliation (including a category of non-denominational). Bear in mind that some schools affiliated with a particular religion do accept students from other faiths.

Grade or Year Level Taught

In compiling these menus, I have decided to have only three categories: Primary, Secondary, and Prep to Year 12 It should be realised that some schools also offer classes at a Pre-School level. Logistics make it impractical to include them in this menu system.

While the menu system as described above will not provide full details on which years a school teaches, that information is provided in the main alphabetical listing.

"Albany Creek State High School has been running a Gifted Education and Talent Development program for the last 9 years. The Horizons program is a series of program which aims to enhance and develop students' skills in a range of faculty areas. These programs range from a Level One approach to giftedness such as enrichment programs to value add to a child's curriculum experience such as visits to Universities or visiting guest authors and artists. Level Two and Three approaches to giftedness rely on a variety of programs such as Days of Excellences and student generated projects. Level Four approaches to giftedness involve embedding gifted teaching strategies within the curriculum, and targeting gifted students for special mentoring programs. We have been very successful in a range of local, state and national competitions across a range of faculty areas. This success has been a direct by-product of our gifted education program. Acceleration is possible within our school, this is based on a series of interviews with students and their parents to ensure that this really is the best approach for that student."

"Curriculum equity pathways were well established and specific student needs were catered for within classroom experiences through an extensive Gifted and Talented Program called Horizons, and the Learning Support and Special Needs area. "

"AMSCO offers an accelerated curriculum in Mathematics, Science and Computers for gifted students entering Year 8 or Year 9 at Glenmore State High School.

Students who complete the AMSCO program will complete three years of study in the curriculum areas of Mathematics, Science and Computers by the end of year 9. At the start of year 10, the AMSCO graduates will have a variety of options, including starting one or more senior school subjects in mathematics, science and/or computer studies.

AMSCO was a pilot program in 1999, with student selection taking place only from Glenmore State High School’s feeder schools. For the 2000 school year, application is open to all Year 7 students in Rockhampton.

Who would benefit from AMSCO?

The AMSCO program will provide a stimulating educational environment for Year 8 and Year 9 students who have a strong work ethic, proven ability in the areas of mathematics and science, and have an interest in computers. Ten to fifteen percent of students entering Year 8 in 2000 could benefit from participating in AMSCO.

Why Choose AMSCO?

The AMSCO program will challenge students in a way that is not possible in a traditional curriculum.

Necessary skills for a successful and satisfying career in the new millenium include the ability to think critically and think laterally, to have the confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems, and to work successfully in collaboration with others. These elements are at the heart of the AMSCO program.

The students in the AMSCO program will offer peer support for each student to work hard and strive for excellence.

Students who complete the AMSCO curriculum successfully by the end of Year 9 may commence the study of some Senior subjects in Year 10, and complete those subjects by the end of Year 11.  Students who complete senior at the end of year 11 in one or more subjects will have a variety of options in year 12, including tertiary study at CQU, doing additional senior subjects, or doing work experience in a field of interest to them.

AMSCO students are not ‘skipping’ a year level.  In Maths, Science and Computers they will be working with other AMSCO students. In their other subjects, these students will be following the normal year 8 curriculum.

 The Curriculum

The curriculum will be based around higher order thinking skills, including critical thinking and problem solving. It will involve students working both independently and collaboratively.

The curriculum will integrate the study areas of mathematics, science and technology. While studying mathematics, students will be using computers and graphics calculators to assist them in their learning. While studying science, students will be using the Internet as a research tool, and using their graphics calculators to gather data and apply mathematics to the problems they are studying. While studying computers, students will draw on Maths and Science topics to provide a context for their learning." (http://www.glenmoreshs.qld.edu.au/amsco_ov.html)

"Golden Beach provides students of all abilities with a variety of arenas to explore and extend their talents and self-knowledge, whilst also learning the skills of teamwork and leadership. We seek to promote both high levels of participation and the pursuit of excellence by students who have talents in particular areas. While it is not compulsory to participate in any of the cocurricular programs such as our Gifted and Talented Program, University of NSW Testing or Camping Program, to do so is very much in keeping with the school's educational philosophy. Such involvement is a most important part of being a Golden Beach student. It builds school spirit and instils a sense of belonging.

Students who show special interest or talent have many opportunities at Golden Beach designed specifically to meet their aptitudes and needs. Individuals are invited to participate in challenges such as T.O.M. (Tournament of Minds), Future Problem Solving, Maths Team Challenge, Kawana School's Challenge, Newspaper Competition and Story Writing Competition. Our school has established a close liaison with Caloundra State High School, a G.A.T.E.W.A.Y.
