Welcome
to Ron's Aussie Tether Car Pages.
I
aim to promote tether car racing in Australia, particularly my home
state of Victoria.
Tether
cars are miniature race cars powered by engines up to
10ccm
in capacity and operated on a 19.9m circular track tethered to
the
centre via a steel wire, with speeds of over 300km/h
achieved.
Tether Cars
were first raced in Melbourne, Victoria, on a 36 foot
diameter
(6 laps to the 1/8 mile) track in a hall at Fairfield in
1947.
Later a
52 foot track (8 laps to the 1/4 mile) was constructed
at
Maribyrnong in
1948. A 70 foot diameter track (6 laps to the 1/4 mile)
was then
constructed next to the Yarra River at Como Park
in 1950.
Both
operated until the late 1950's. Later a 70 foot track
at
Keysborough
was built on the corner of Chandler and Kirkham roads.
Tether
cars were last raced at the Noble Park/ Keysborough
track
in 1974, but the track has since been demolished to make way
for
commercial development.
Car
at the left is my replica Pfefferle 3.5cc M class car, powered by a
OPS 21.
Best speed to date 166.07km/h.
