“Why play Hordes of the things (HOTT)?”
Unlike other miniature Wargames, HOTT can be used for fantasy armies like Elves or Dwarves, science-fiction armies like Star Wars Imperial Troopers and any other fantastic or amazing army you can think of!
Pirates of the Caribbean? OK!
“Weird” World War Two? Yes!
Children’s fairy tales or nursery rhymes? Sure!
It’s not hard to convert your existing army or figures to HOTT, either!
There’s a big range of troops you can have in your armies. Dragons, Gods, Heroes, Airboats (such as Zeppelins and UFOs), Behemoths (dinosaurs, giants, big robots), Beasts (wolves, big cat family), Artillery (catapults, laser cannons), Hordes and plenty more. What’s in your army is mostly up to you – if you are patient, you may prefer a line of slow, heavily-armoured Blades…but if you are impetuous and like taking risks, maybe faster-moving wild Warbands or gallant Knights will suit you more.
HOTT can be extremely cheap. You can use any make of figures, not just those of only one company. Armies can be made from toys, too! Your supermarket may have cheap packets of toys that will be fine for an army. One player in the UK uses armies that she carves out of cheese and eats when the game is over! There is only one rulebook (costs about $20), no supplements – and the rulebook has only been updated once in 15 years!
HOTT is pretty quick to play. An average game lasts an hour, but through poor leadership or bad luck it can be over more quickly! HOTT doesn’t need much space, either – games are to be played on 3 foot square battlefields.
HOTT is quick to learn and enjoyable. Most new players have grasped the essentials by the end of their first game. People (of differing ages!) whom have never played before have entered large tournaments and come in the middle. While the rules seem simple, they are subtle – regular players can do well even if they roll badly on the dice. HOTT uses the same mechanics as DBA and DBM (same creators), so players of those games can be playing HOTT in moments.
HOTT is played here at NWA and at other clubs around Australia and the world, so opponents are everywhere.
